FREE AS IN BEER?????

So the software company I devote most of my time to has just released an open source version of it's commercial offering. This has maybe opened up the most ginormous can of internal battle worms for me in a loooooooooooong time. It has really made me think of what made me get into this industry in the first place. So what is "free as in beer"? I hear this thrown around a good deal (more in the last couple of months internally). Fron the context, I think most of us can grasp what this is about, but as I've been hearing this in mixed context lately I thought I would dig in a bit further . It seems it's roots are from the first bit of an essay by Richard Stallman.

Free software is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of free as in free speech, not as in free beer.

I think this is such a wonderful statement. I think all too often any more we get wrapped up in how free and/or open source software is going to effect our bottom line (the one defined by the no longer almighty dollar) and lose sight of what this can actually bring into our industry. What is it going to take to tilt the scales back in the direction of free as in speech? I mean we're taling about EMAIL here! Shouldn't free as in speech be at the top of what drives our decisions about how we deliver this to our customers? Maybe it's not our place to make that decision for our customers? I guess I feel it is our responsibility to provide these customers with that other thing that goes so hand in hand with freedom, choice. At the very least it is something to think about as we make these decisions.

My Portuguese is rough - But I like UOL

Last week Universo Online S.A. (UOL) acquired the "clients" of web hosting company Digiweb, also of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In November, UOL also acquired the web hosting "clients" of Plug In another Brazilian firm.

The importance: UOL is now the third-largest provider of web-hosting services company in Brazil.

UOL did not mention the "third largest" part after the Plug In acquisition --- letting me believe that Digiweb was a fairly large deal.

I check out UOL - Basically an Internet/media powerhouse. They are vertical, horizontal, diagonal and the karma sutra all rolled into one. You really have to read the corporate bio --- Brazilian portal with 1.4 billion page-views a month, 1.7 million content paying subscribers, 1 million broadband customers…and now the THIRD LARGEST web hosting company in Brazil (Which I may add has a population of 184 million).

They want to collect the tolls on the electronic highway...including all entrances and exits. Someone has to collect.

The UOL financials…some great info…

• My favorite part: "The Company had no outstanding loans or financings at the end of the 4Q07". (Same position as Microsoft)
• They have a lot of cash - $284 million USD.
• 2007 EBITDA - $91.8 million USD - a fantastic 29% of net revenues.
  

The largest shareholder (41%) is the San Palo newspaper owner Folhapar.

UOL stock has dropped some 60% in the past 12 months...but the one thing I know about newspapers, they are long term players with long term visions.

Today`s suggestion:



I'm quite happy that is short as this means I haven't had any big problem during
these months. Just 2 things to add to what I wrote in the past:



I've had seldom connectivity problems to our websites, I couldn't always check
if it was hostgator problem or other problem related to my connectivity but
sometimes it really looked like it was hostgator problem.

I'm just talking about few times for some minutes. Not really a problem for us.



The only really annoying thing it happened is that once one of our website
(vagabondo.net) has been discontinued because it loaded too much the server.
Generally speaking suspending a site because is loading too much the server
could even be a positive thing (you prevent the whole server sites to slow down
too much, you can have time to see if someone is "attacking" the server or the
site ecc.). What I'm complaining about is:



1) We received no warning about it, not before, not after the site was
suspended!!! We just realized it, wrote to support and got an answer after few
hours.



2) We received no details about the excessive load the server was experiencing
becasue of our site, no detail about where the problem could lie (too many sql
queries? too many hits? heavy php proccesses? ecc. ecc.) so as to understand
better if this could happen again and possibly how to solve the the problem.



All in all this leaves you with a scary impression: it just happened one time
but it could happen anytime not knowing why it happened (and why it stop
happening!).



Having said that I still think hostgator provide a good service (that needs
improving though) and can confirm what I wrote in previous review.
